This Video with That Audio

I just watched a short clip where Vangelis explains that the opening scene of Chariots of Fire with the men running on the beach was originally going to be shown with another one of his pieces. From the clip, it looks like this piece was "L'enfant." I decided to watch the video with the audio from L'enfant. It works. It works really well. Everyone needs to try this.

To do this correctly, get these both started at about the same time, but mute the first one.

Greek Class

Our Greek class at church has started using a new textbook, Koine Greek Reader by Rodney J. Decker. We finished Book Two of Athenaze, and this was what we decided to follow that with.

Today's reading was interesting. We're in Mark 9, and there was the part about the millstone around the neck. In the notes, we were warned not to translate this as "donkey stone" or worse yet, "stone donkey"! Funny stuff. This is actually a millstone of the sort that a donkey would turn. Which makes me wonder whether this was a live metaphor, where we're supposed to picture the donkey turning it. If so, it seems we might have some comic relief in what is otherwise a very scary passage.

This textbook is good with its suggestions. I have ordered a couple of books that it references (The Gospel According to John commentary by D.A. Carson and The Gospel of Mark commentary by R.T. France). I have more in mind. It also suggests points where it would be particularly good to look up words in the Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich lexicon (e.g. the donkey stone). It's great to be reminded of what you can do with reference books you already own.
